Last week, 1st June, I was invited to visit the reincarnation of my Dad’s original 22nd Parachute Company – The Pathfinders.
I am pushed for time, as its 10.00 pm and Ive just finished packing and Im up early to drive down to RAF Harwell to set off at 11:03 .
After a very tight security control, I was welcomed by the CSM and Second in command who both attended my Dad’s funeral in person, a gesture that summed up the brotherhood of not just the Pathfinders, but the whole Parachute Regiment.
I will post again in more detail when I have time, but just wanted to say a huge Thank you to all who made me feel so welcome and also the time afforded to me by a Major of the Parachute Regiment.
I was shown a presentation of just what the Pathfinders do, and what it takes to selected to this incredible unit.
I was shown round the Headquarters, the ‘recreation room’, the gym and the stores … and I was also allowed to visit the armoury and given a detailed description of the various (and incredible) weaponry that the Pathfinders use.
As it was a ‘Medal Service Day’ for the Parachute Regiment, I was also treated to a display by the amazing Red Devils.
But the real pride was when the CSM explained to me that without doubt, the Pathfinders of 2022 are exactly the same as the Pathfinders of 1044, with the only difference being a higher level of equipment and technology, but the basic job is exactly the same and summed up in their simple motto : FIRST IN.
I will post again in more detail, but all I can sat is it was a total honour to be allowed such a close and personal insight into your amazing world and a world, where mose of us have no idea how we and our country are being protected.
If you are wondering why there are no selfies or photos, the answer is simple … these guys rely on total anonymity … their and our lives could depend on it.
It was also great to meet in person Natalie Urbaniak who works so hard for SUPPORT OUR PARAS.
